  • Darell (Darel, Darol, Darry) Means, 'special' or 'beloved'. This surname turned first name has been fashionable since the 1940s, helped by film producer Darryl Zanuck who founded Twentieth Century Fox.
  • Darryl (Daryl, Darrell, Darrel, Darrol) Comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'beloved', and was in vogue earlier this century in its various forms.
  • Ethan Means 'firmness' or 'constancy'. A Biblical name which is sometimes found in the United States. Ethan Allen was a prominent figure in the American War of Independence and the name has also been used in fiction.
  • Joel Comes from the Hebrew 'Jehovah is the Lord' and was the name of one of the minor prophets of the Old Testament. The Normans brought it to Britain as a personal name.
  • Nathan (Nat, Natty) Means 'gift' in Hebrew. In the Old Testament Nathan was a prophet. The name was occasionally used by the Puritans in the 17th century and subsequently occurred from time to time. However apart from a brief period in fashion in the United States around 1900, it has received little attention.
  • Zacharias, Zachary (Zak, Zacaria, Zach, Zachery, Zeke) Comes from the Hebrew meaning 'God has remembered', or 'the Lord is renowned'. Today it is rarely found in Britain, but more often in the United States. The shorter form is better known.
